Eyewitness
to History edited by John Carey. A fellow homeschooler urged me to read this
book because she and her son found it a fascinating look at historical events.
It is! Throughout the book's 706 pages, there are hundreds of accounts of major
historical events from the writings of eyewitnesses from the period. As you read
these personal accounts, spanning from the time of ancient Greece to the fall of
President Marcos of Spain, you gain a much more personal and vivid view of the
past. Many are very moving. It is an excellent book alone or as a supplement. I
recommend it for teens to adult because of reading level and also the mature
content but certainly sections could be read to younger children.
Paper, 706
pages.

"...darkness came on once more and ashes began to fall again, this time
in heavy showers. We rose from time to time and shook them off, otherwise we
should have been buried and crushed beneath their weight. I could boast that not
a groan or cry of fear escaped me in these perils, but I admit that I derived
some poor consolation in my mortal lot from the belief that the whole world was
dying with me and I with it." written by Pliny the Younger, Aug 24, AD 79, about
the eruption of Vesuvius.
