wpe32.jpg (2869 bytes)The First Honest Book About Lies is very true to its title. The author, Jonni Kincher, has done an excellent job of making the whole topic of truth and lies interesting, informative, and extremely thought-provoking.

Is honesty the best policy in every circumstance? What exactly is a lie? How can you tell when you are being lied to? Did you know that have you probably lied to yourself on occasion? How accurate are your own senses?

Truth. Who determines what is the truth? How much can the truth be manipulated and still be the truth? How does someone's perspective influence the ability to judge information as accurate or truthful?

These questions and many more are addressed in this fun and easy-to-read book. Intended for ages 13 and up, it can be used as a springboard for discussions with younger children. Teens and adults will appreciate the quotes, examples, mini tests, and activities. Etiquette, science, math, statistics, economics, politics, advertising and history are all included in the far-reaching search for the truth in this book about lies.

An ideal book to just have around the house, it lends itself to hit-or-miss reading rather than studying from cover to cover. The index itself is fun to peruse. For example, the first three items under B are: Babe, the blue ox; Banneker, Benjamin; Barbie dolls. Now aren't you curious about what those three very different entries have to do with lies and truth? A very thorough bibliography is included for more in depth reading, but there is enough substance in this book alone to keep my family busy thinking and talking for quite a while. Honest! S.B.
