A History of US Series
by Joy Hakim

This is a very popular series and for good reason. It presents history in a narrative fashion, which makes it very readable. While the author certainly has a couple of biases I don't agree with (what history book worth its salt doesn't have opinions?!), this series is interesting and holds the attention of its readers. I've been reading these to my children, and they have sparked many discussions. The set includes the 10 books and the 11th volume, which is a source book and index that includes many primary source documents. The source book is a valuable resource in itself and a valuable addition to the set. Teacher guides are available for each book.

Recommended by the publisher for ages 9-12, though I think this series can span a much wider age range. Paper. Parent's Choice Award Winner.

Previous Editions:

Book 4: The New Nation (1789-1850), 3rd edition - Observe our first president as he figures out how to do the job. Also, herein: Details of the world's greatest land bargains. News of an expedition to unmapped territory west of the wide Mississippi. And stories of a very power Indian leader, and of a man who made himself free.

Beginning with George Washington's inauguration and continuing into the nineteenth century, The New Nation tells the story of the remarkable challenges that the new country faced. These dramatic events and more are woven into a seamless tale that's so exciting, how could it be true? But it is - it's A History of US.

#3262 $15.95 $9.99 (Has a mild corner crease. One copy available.)

Book 9: War, Peace, and All That Jazz (1918-1945), 3rd edition - Model T's, wood-frame airplanes, radios, Prohibition, jazz, the Roaring Twenties, Babe Ruth, flappers, the Depression, and two World Wars - all in a thirty-year span. From Louis Armstrong's jazz to Franklin Delano Roosevelt's four presidential terms, from the finale of one world war to the dramatic close of the second, War, Peace, and All That Jazz presents the story of some of the most exciting years in U.S. History.

Paper, 218 pages. 9.2"x7.6"x0.6".

#3361 $15.95 $9.99 (Has a mild corner crease. One copy available.)

Book 10: War, All the People (1945-2001), 3rd edition - People call it "post-war," but All the People covers a period in U.S. history that features battles of another kind - from Cold War combat overseas to struggles for equality at home to learning to live with the threat of terrorism on U.S. soil. During these years, the United States began to be a nation for all its people, outlawing school segregation, protesting war in Vietnam, and campaigning for equal rights for women. From Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to seamstress Rosa Parks, extraordinary individuals led us back to the ideals espoused by the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. But mostly-as it always has been in the United States - it was ordinary citizens who marched and voted and hoped and dreamed and made things happen.

All the People includes the events of September 11, 2001, and a discussion of how many aspects of the terrorist attacks have brought to the forefront the qualities that keep America strong: representative democracy, freedom of speech and press, and, especially in the face of religious totalitarianism, the basic freedom of religious tolerance.

Paper, 266 pages. 9.2"x7.6"x0.6".

#3383 $15.95 $9.99 (Two copies available.)

History of US Book 11: Sourcebook and Index. An older edition that is a great collection of source documents. It is arranged chronologically, beginning with the Magna Carta and ending with Ronald Reagan's 1988 speech at Moscow State University. Each document is introduced and placed in historical context. Difficult vocabulary is defined in the margins along with explanatory notes and commentary that aids in understanding the meaning and historical importance of each document.  The Sourcebook and Index is an easy-to-use collection of the documents most essential to understanding American history.

Paper, 319 pages. First Edition.

#7722 $13.95 $9.99

A History of US: War, Peace and All That Jazz (1918-1945) Teaching Guide
